Prevent Dogs From Climbing On Furniture

Most dogs have the habit of climbing on furniture, which is quite annoying, especially at mealtime. Dogs do this to attract the owner's attention. For some dogs, it is simply comfortable for them to rest on a cozy chair or a bed. Dogs do this to catch forty winks. The thought to lay flat on the hard floor drives them away. Comfort is not the reason alone for dogs climbing on furniture.

Dogs scan the whole house for the best place to accommodate and end up climbing on furniture. Often, they sleep on either the owner's comfortable bed or a soft couch. For dog owners, who wish to see their dogs give up the habit, they may follow certain instructions so that their dog behaves well and appears disciplined for all.

Instructions:

1.        Dog owners possessing a grown-up dog need to understand the nature of their dog in detail. The previous owner might have given the dog complete freedom for climbing on furniture. The dog might not like the new owner's idea of restricting it from doing so. The owner needs to have the patience, since it might take time for the dog to abandon the habit altogether. Divert the dog's attention somewhere else whenever, he is about to climb the furniture.

2.        Bring home a comfortable bed for the dog. The owner may even make a bed with blankets and pillows. Older dogs develop sore joints, due to which they experience pain in the area when they sleep on the floor. Show the bed to the dog and see how it reacts. Put some toys into it and serve a treat, when the dog positions itself into the bed.

3.        Locate the dog in the bed, when it refuses to follow order of not climbing on furniture. Pat the dog, so that he feels someone is there to care. This might change the dog's nature of climbing on furniture.

4.        The owner may hold the dog firmly, when he tries to climb on furniture frequently. Utter words such as ‘No’, ‘Off’ until the dog quits the idea. Keep cool while communicating with the dog and point him towards the floor. Maintain eye contact while giving such instructions.

5.        To prevent the dog from climbing on furniture, praise it and point fingers to locations other than the furniture. Accept the dog's behavior and believe it might take time for him to overcome the habit. Always be considerate and caring toward your dog.
